LOCK IN YOUR COLLEGE MAJOR EARLY

I was having a conversation recently over a business lunch with a local university employee and they shared something I wish I knew when I began my college career. Here’s the tip:

When your son or daughter registers for classes in their first year of college, have them select a major they think they’ll have an interest in down the road. The reasoning behind this is sometimes the class requirements for a particular major can change over the course of a college journey. For example, if you begin your college career and the required hours for courses in a major is X and non-major related courses is y, x+y should equal approximately 120 hours. What schools don’t tell you is that those requirements can change during the course of a college career and if you have not locked in your major and additional requirements are imposed, the student must adhere to achiever the updated required hours instead of what the course book indicated on day one of their freshman year. UNLESS THE STUDENT LOCKED IN THEIR MAJOR WHEN THEY SIGNED UP FOR CLASSES ON DAY 1!

TAKE ACTION!

HAVE YOUR KIDS DECLARE THEIR MAJOR FROM THE BEGINNING AND SAVE THE COURSEBOOK FROM DAY ONE SO THEY CAN REFERENCE IT SHOULD THERE BE ANY ADDITIONAL COURSES AFTER THEY WALK ON CAMPUS.
